<h2>Rehabilitation Centre</h2> <p>Juliet Barker is our Rehabilitation Centre Manager. She has worked in canine hydrotherapy and rehabilitation for many years. She has considerable expertise in post-operative boarding and the rehabilitation of orthopaedic and spinal patients and works with a dedicated team of individuals to achieve optimal care &ndash;levels and functional results for our patients. Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions are combined where appropriate in an integrated approach.</p> <p><img src="../../pictures/0000/0377/rehabilitation_long.jpg" alt="http://besupported-001.vm.brightbox.net/pictures/0000/0377/rehabilitation_long.jpg" /></p> <h4>Physiotherapy Service</h4> <p><img class="inline" src="../../pictures/0000/0373/physio_small_pic.jpg" alt="http://besupported-001.vm.brightbox.net/pictures/0000/0373/physio_small_pic.jpg" />Fiona Doubleday is our resident Chartered Physiotherapist. She has a human BSc (hons) degree in physiotherapy and post graduate training in veterinary physiotherapy. She is a category A member of ACPAT (The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy) which provides full insurance for the treatment of animals using physiotherapy.</p> <p>Chartered physiotherapists examine movement and posture. Their expertise is developed by having an in depth knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, pathology and physiology which enables them to assess and treat injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.</p> <p>The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce pain, swelling and muscle spasm. It helps to encourage healing and improve range of movement, prevents secondary complications, enhances and/or maintains function.</p> <p>Examples of conditions treated:</p> <ul style="text-align: left;"> <li>post orthopaedic surgery cases</li> <li>spinal pain</li> <li>tendon and ligament muscle strains</li> <li>muscle atrophy</li> <li>nerve damage</li> <li>arthritic stiffness</li> </ul> <p>Physio treatment is an adjunct to veterinary treatment, not a substitute. At Fitzpatrick Referrals we have a good working relationship with all the members of the multidisciplinary team i.e. vets/ physios/ nurses/ hydro team, all working together to achieve optimum recovery for our patients. We treat patients as inpatients and then follow up once discharged with outpatient appointments. We are also available for direct physiotherapy referrals without the need to see one of our vets first.</p> <h4>Hydrotherapy Pool</h4> <p>We have a large purpose-built hydrotherapy pool with a long sloping ramp for easy access for dogs of all sizes and our patients are accompanied by hydrotherapy assistants in the water at all times. We find hydrotherapy to be a very useful tool in the rehabilitation of dogs and cats with a variety of orthopaedic problems, for post-operative recovery, to ease arthritis, to increase mobility generally and as an integral part of a weight loss programme. Gradually over the next 24 hours she regained the use of her left forelimb and some movement in the hind limbs. She was scheduled for an MRI which identified a low volume, high velocity disc protrusion at C2/3 with substantial swelling particularly to the right side. One of our clinicians, Sarah Girling opted not to operate in this case in the hope that Maisie would make a gradual recovery over the coming weeks. This involved passive range of movement exercises and short periods of standing giving her total support to begin with. The kennel staff were then instructed to continue these exercises every two hours throughout the day, turning her every four hours to prevent pressure sores and unnecessary discomfort. This continued for several days and then it was decided that to increase Maisie&rsquo;s chance of recovery we should introduce hydrotherapy. The simple act of floating in the warm water helps to relax the muscles and often with spinal cases, movement in some if not all of the limbs is instantaneous. In Maisie&rsquo;s case, to our delight, once in the pool, movement in all four limbs was obvious straight away. Our hydrotherapy assistant Amie Slade immediately rose to the challenge and spent half an hour every day for the next week in the pool with Maisie, constantly reassuring her, massaging her, and encouraging greater range of movement in the water with free swimming and a range of specific exercises devised by Fiona.</p> <p style="outline-width: 0px; It is for this reason &ndash; and for hundreds of other cases like Maisie&rsquo;s, that we promote this type of rehabilitation as a matter of course.
