Specialist orthopaedic internship

Fitzpatrick Referrals currently sponsors residencies, internships and fellowships throughout the globe, and as part of our commitment to advancing this area of the profession, we are delighted to advertise a specialist orthopaedic internship starting in mid-May 2018.

Applications are invited from veterinary surgeons with postgraduate experience. This 12-month post will prepare the successful applicant for residency training and will include consultation, wards, diagnostic imaging, surgery and rehabilitation. Interns will be involved in some of the world’s most innovative and advanced orthopaedic procedures.

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Good written and spoken English
  • Focus, resilience and determination
  • Excellent communication skills with clients and colleagues and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Organised and care-driven
  • Able to work efficiently and effectively within a 24/7 team environment
  • Strong references
  • Membership of The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS)
  • Preferably two years’ post-qualification experience or completion of a rotating internship

The internship has an emphasis on diagnosis, surgical management and post-operative care of complex orthopaedic conditions.

Interns are expected to play a key role within the clinical care team; having daily involvement in routine and cutting-edge orthopaedic surgery. Daily didactic rounds, weekly journal club and weekly radiography classes will help rapidly develop the candidate’s surgical skill base. The research component of the internship focuses on guiding the candidate towards to the publication of clinical research in peer-reviewed publications. The candidate will also be encouraged to present research at national and international meetings.

The Fitzpatrick Referrals Internship Programme is designed to expose the participant to the complexity of orthopaedics and to allow the intern to pursue a residency. Fitzpatrick Referrals sponsors several residencies both in the UK and the USA and eligible candidates have graduated from an internship at Fitzpatrick Referrals to entry onto a Fitzpatrick Referrals sponsored residency programme.

The practice offers several surgical suites with advanced equipment for orthopaedic surgery including high definition arthroscopy. There are two digital radiology suites, CT scanner, and high field MRI. Full-featured anaesthetic monitoring equipment including ECG, pulse oximetry, non-invasive blood pressure, and capnography compliment the surgical theatres. A state of the art kinetic and kinematic laboratory allows objective pre and postoperative gait analysis. Physical rehabilitation facilities include a dedicated physiotherapy area and large hydrotherapy suite. An in-house diagnostic laboratory and advanced therapeutics are also available to further increase the quality of care to our patients.

It is envisioned that this internship will help form an excellent foundation platform for further career progression, including application for potential residencies.

Accommodation is provided within 10 minutes’ drive of the practice and remuneration includes a competitive salary, four weeks’ vacation and three days of CPD.

Fitzpatrick Referrals Orthopaedics and Neurology is in Eashing, Surrey, 10 minutes from Guildford and 40 minutes by train to London.
