Dylan’s bone tumour

Gorgeous 13-year-old Maine Coon cat Dylan arrives at Fitzpatrick Referrals specialist veterinary hospital with a very worrying lump under one of his front legs.

Professor Noel Fitzpatrick with a Maine coon cat patient

Noel feels this is a potential tumour, and at 13 years old, he’s facing a difficult path. For Noel and Dylan’s mum Michelle, the decision on whether or not to operate is not just clinical, but deeply personal.

In some cases, any advanced surgical procedure may not be the right thing to do, and in Dylan’s situation, the risks of potential surgery balanced against the reality of his age is a very real factor in decision-making. Noel and Michelle explore the emotional and ethical questions that come with treating much-loved older animal companions, and with Dylan being the same breed as Noel’s feline friends, Ricochet and Excalibur, his story touches hearts in some unexpected ways.

Above all, this case is about leading with love and always doing the right thing.
