Luna’s spinal stroke & acupunture therapy

Lovely Luna the Maine Coon lapped up lots of fuss from RVN Jess during her stay with us, after being referred to Fitzpatrick Referrals neurology service.

Nine-year-old Luna is under the care of Neurologist Nadia Shihab, after showing signs of weakness in her pelvic limbs and crying in pain when picked up.

Investigations and diagnosis

Investigations revealed a mild-moderate T11/12 disc extrusion/protrusion, spinal cord ischemia (spinal stroke), severe bilateral elbow osteoarthritis, and mild hip dysplasia.

Conservative treatment

She is being treated conservatively with a period of rest to minimise any further spinal cord trauma and medication to relieve her nerve pain and elbow discomfort.

As part of her ongoing care, Luna recently returned to the practice for an acupuncture session with Dietrich von Schweinitz, BSc DVM MRCVS Cert Vet Ac (IVAS).

While traditional acupuncture is often described in terms of balancing energy in meridians, the medical explanation emerging from research suggests that it can help stimulate the body’s repair mechanisms in the nervous system, immune system, and hormonal and cellular systems.
