Pichu’s split paw (ectrodactyly)

Much-loved miniature dachshund Pichu travels all the way from Northern Ireland to see Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, in the hope of a surgical solution for her unusual deformity.

Miniature dachshund Pichu has been struggling to walk on one of her front paws. Born with ectrodactyly, she has an unusually developed split paw with six toes that she finds painful to put weight on, limiting her ability to run and move.

Worried about Pichu’s wellbeing, her human mum Mary, travels all the way from Northern Ireland to Fitzpatrick Referrals looking for possible solutions.

After a CT scan, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick begins mapping out how he could potentially reconstruct the miniature dachshund’s paw. But as Pichu’s condition is not life-threatening, there remains the ethical question of whether or not major surgery is the right thing to do for her.
