We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic veterinary surgeons to join our surgical internship programme. You must be dedicated to practising the highest standards of veterinary medicine and patient care as well as committed to furthering your career through improving your knowledge base and technical skills.
Fitzpatrick Referrals is a world-renowned independent ortho-neuro specialist referral centre in Surrey with a proven track record for helping interns achieve residency positions for more than a decade.
The surgical internship at Fitzpatrick Referrals Orthopaedics and Neurology is a fixed one-year position. The successful candidates will work under the supervision of specialists in orthopaedic surgery, neurology and anaesthesia. As an intern you will play an integral role in the day-to-day running of the clinic; assisting in surgery, helping work up patients on behalf of the specialist team and providing world-class in-patient care. There is also the opportunity for active involvement in some of the world’s most innovative and advanced orthopaedic and neurosurgical procedures, some of which are unique to our hospital. The programme includes weekly seminars and journal clubs and offers support and encouragement to prepare and publish scientific research during your internship.
We believe that the confluence of a very high caseload, a mixture of routine and advanced neuro and orthopaedic surgery, a fair rota allowing for appropriate study, the mentorship and encouragement of a team of world-class surgeons with decades of experience between us and a tremendous track record in academic presentations and publications, equips our interns as well as, or better than, anywhere in the world for surgical residency positions. This is evidenced by a very large number of previous surgical interns who have now achieved residencies and become boarded surgeons.
You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Previous experience in small animal practice or an internship is an advantage, but new graduates are actively encouraged to apply since we consider our programme to provide an excellent footing for any pathway forward in companion animal care. Applicants must be a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (or eligible). Overseas applicants must be able to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing. Visa sponsorship is available.
