About
EBVS® European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery
Bertie graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2014 and immediately threw himself into all aspects of veterinary practice in a busy first opinion small animal hospital in Lancashire. During his four years in general practice, Bertie developed a keen interest in surgery and its co-disciplines, completing a certificate in veterinary diagnostic imaging.
Bertie returned to the University of Liverpool in 2018 to complete a rotating internship before undertaking a three-year European College of Veterinary Surgeons approved residency programme in small animal surgery at Fitzpatrick Referrals and a referral centre in Guildford. He has worked in veterinary referral practice since completing his residency and became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2025. Bertie returned to Fitzpatrick Referrals in January 2026 as a senior surgeon.
Bertie has presented research internationally and has published in several global veterinary surgery journals. He is interested in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery and especially enjoys complex traumatology and fracture management.
To Bertie, orthopaedics represents the happy marriage of helping our furry friends back up on their paws and a passion for using novel implant solutions, which he suspects may stem from his lifelong obsession with LEGO. Outside of work, he is busy chasing around his two young sons and being an enthusiastic, if not particularly speedy, home DIYer.
