About
The dentistry nursing team at Fitzpatrick Referrals is an integral part of caring for your animal friend, from admission to discharge. This starts during the initial consultation and continues throughout their dentistry assessment and treatment.
Their role begins by supporting the clinician during the consultation: welcoming you and the patient, taking body weights, transferring the patient to our dentistry wards after admission, and ensuring they are comfortable in their kennel for the day.
Our dentistry nurse will then ensure that your animal friend feels safe and comfortable in the hospital environment, before performing pre-anaesthesia assessments and undertaking any necessary blood tests that the clinician has requested. After preparing all medications, they will then assist the clinician and anaesthetist with induction of general anaesthesia or sedation. This allows your animal to have the necessary investigations and treatment, be that dental radiography, advanced imaging such as a CT-scan, a detailed dental assessment, or oral surgery.
Supported by some of the most advanced anaesthesia monitoring systems available, the dentistry nurse stays with and supports the patient throughout their anaesthesia journey at the hospital. They monitor and communicate the wellbeing of the patient throughout their procedures, allowing every treatment to be tailored to their individual needs. Once the clinician has finished, the dentistry nurse ensures the patient has a smooth, safe and comfortable recovery from their sedation or anaesthetic.

If further inpatient care is required, the dentistry nurses will communicate with the ward nursing team to ensure that they are aware of everything they need to know to continue providing high levels of care during your animal’s stay. Alternatively, if they are a day patient, the dentistry nurse will return them to our calm and peaceful dentistry recovery suite, where monitoring is continued until the patient is ready to go home. This can include everything from providing further pain medication and some food, to comforting cuddles to support their mental wellbeing.
The dentistry nurse will then provide you with all the recovery information you need to ensure your animal friend gets back to full health as quickly as possible.
