Diagnosis
Following a thorough assessment by Specialist Surgeon Bertie Phipps, Barry was diagnosed with multiple ruptured ligaments within his left shoulder. The injuries had caused multidirectional shoulder instability within the joint and had also led to the development of secondary degenerative joint disease.
Surgery
Given the extent of the damage and the poor likelihood of achieving a comfortable, functional outcome through reconstructive surgery alone, Bertie recommended a shoulder arthrodesis (fusion surgery). This procedure is considered a salvage procedure and is reserved for situations when a joint cannot be successfully repaired by other means. By permanently fusing the joint, the surgery aims to eliminate pain and provide a stable, functional limb.
Recovery and rehabilitation
Just a few weeks after surgery, Barry made excellent progress. As part of his recovery, his family opted for him to board with us for a few weeks after surgery, where he received daily physiotherapy and rehabilitation support. These sessions are designed to help rebuild strength, improve mobility and support his return to a happy, active life.
Everyone involved in Barry’s care has been delighted with his progress so far, and we wish him all the best with his continued recovery and a fulfilled and pain-free quality of life ahead.
